The Grapevine boys basketball team evened its season record at 1-1 last Friday with a 69-58 victory against Boswell, and coach Darryn Shearmire said his team looked much better than in its season-opening loss to Birdville.
Grapevine improved to 2-1 with an 85-68 win against Fort Worth Christian on Monday night and will take on Haltom at 8 p.m. Monday at Haltom High School.
"It will be interesting with Haltom, because we both run a full-court press," Shearmire said. "It could be a pretty fun game. It will be interesting to see how we match up with them."
Shearmire said the game against Boswell was really the tale of two halves for his team.
"We finally put some stuff together," Shearmire said. "On defense, we patched up a few things that we were having trouble with against Birdville. Our first half really wasn’t that good. We had nine turnovers, but in the second half, we had some shots drop and forced quite a few turnovers.
"We played very well together in the second half especially."
Shearmire said a couple of players had really strong efforts in the game against the Pioneers.
"I think Aaron [Bentley] and Kody [Diehm] have had great games for us the past two games," Shearmire said. "Aaron really had a great second half for us against Boswell. He scored 23 in the second half against them.
"Kody has just been real consistent assist wise and getting people the ball. He just kind of runs the show, and gets us about 18 points a game."
Shearmire said his team looked totally different in the game against Boswell from its first effort against Birdville.
"We got hurt by their big man inside against Birdville," Shearmire said. "We just didn’t get down and double him up enough. Another kid hit four threes in the second half for them, and that really hurt us.
"Daniel Green was probably the biggest difference for us in the Boswell game. He had several blocks, which was a tremendous help."
