Letter to the Editor - August 29
Dear Editor:
If media messages are accurate, many "citizens of the shale" in Tarrant County will be given an economic bonus from leasing their mineral rights for natural gas. I would ask each "shale beneficiary" to consider thinking about contributing a percentage of it to not- so-fortunate fellow citizens. A very efficient and effective way to make sure contributions are put to good use is a contribution to United Way of Metropolitan Tarrant County. For many decades, the United Way has allocated community funds to over 50 agencies that collectively make our community a better place to live. Each agency helps those who want to help themselves: women, children, minority groups, seniors; those grappling with disease, poverty, adult literacy, lack of transportation, homelessness, teen violence, natural disasters and legal issues. Boy and Girl Scouts, Salvation Army, Red Cross, Alzheimer’s Association and community resource agencies like Grapevine’s GRACE have all received United Way support. Knowledgeable community volunteers help direct funds where the needs are greatest, or each contributor can specifically direct their contribution.
So as gas signing parties and bonus checks involving millions of dollars involve thousands of us, hopefully we can share a little of it with others. Information about United Way Agencies and contribution options can be found at www.uwmtc.org or by calling 817-258-8000.
