June 20

Dear Editor:

Several people had written letters to the editor in your Friday, June 6, Grapevine Courier regarding the selection of valedictorian for GHS by GCISD. I heartily agree with all three. I am a retired teacher with a master’s degree in education. I taught 30 years and know that I could not have chosen a better profession. I loved every minute of it. [I believe] that the student always comes first and to have my profession receive such a "black eye" by a bunch of people with a complete lack of common sense is reprehensible. What a shame. Something needs to be done and fast.

Dear Editor:

I have an interest in the controversy at Grapevine High concerning the 3-year and 4-year valedictorian as my daughter graduated with that class. Your June 13, 2008 article 3-year valedictorian at GHS "Ready to Move On" said Anjali Datta was denied the title. Your argument is faulty. If a someone runs the fastest 80 yards of a 100-yard dash, they don’t get the first place prize. The valedictorian at GHS is the best student in four years as that is the only way the grades can be comparable. If that award was so important to Ms. Datta, she should have waited to graduate next year with her class. The superintendent’s decision to grant her the 3-year valedictorian was the only fair solution to the 4-year valedictorian who spent the required 4 years at GHS. During the graduation ceremony, Ms. Datta was very gracious and I wish her the best in the future.
