Mom on the Street
Lori Johnson
Hearing a lot about women over 30 — some over 40 — having babies makes me miss the days of holding a newborn’s tiny hand, snuggling with him, and smelling his sweet little baby scent. Life goes by so fast.
The time leading up to the verdict: pregnant or not pregnant? The day you receive the news and can’t wait to share it. The nine months he grows inside you. Getting teary-eyed the first time you feel his fluttery kick. Waiting at the Ob-Gyn, knowing there’s a life inside you filled with possibilities.
Then it happens: Your baby arrives and you know life doesn’t get any better than this!
It seems many mothers in this age group enjoy the baby experience more. You have more patience, confidence and more know-how under your spandex.
If you look around, many women over 30 are preparing to enter the world of diapers, first baths and Sesame Street. So, Mom on the Street asks your thoughts on having a baby at this point in life.
Jennifer Patterson of Colleyville has a teenager in middle school and is thrilled about having a new baby girl in just a few short months.
"The pregnancy has been wonderful, but I’ve had a few obstacles to overcome, such as all-day sickness for three months, and then I stepped off a curb and fractured my fibula. My husband and son had to wait on me and drive me around, but I guess it was a way for them to see what I do," she said.
Being almost 40 and having a baby hasn’t been any harder this time around, Patterson observed. She attributes this to an active lifestyle and continuing with her activities during her pregnancy. She said she has actually lost extra fat by cutting out caffeine and wine.
"Overall, my pregnancy experience has been awesome, and I can’t wait for my little girl, Jayden, to get here!" Patterson said.
Linda Carbonari of Colleyville said that by waiting until she was in her 30s to start a family put things in the right order for her.
"My husband and I were able to first spend time on our marriage and then have our family," Carbonari said.
"I have more peace and patience than I did when I was younger. I will admit that I have less energy than I did with my first child. But, I have two other children now who love to help. The only drawback is that my youngest has more parents than he probably wants," Carbonari chuckled.
So here’s to all you expectant parents, of whatever age. Just give your time of joyful insanity everything you have and enjoy each wondrous moment of life with the little miracles that call you Mommy and Daddy!
