Foreman’s: Colleyville’s Oldest Business

Staff Writer

Foreman’s General Store opened in 1976 as a feed store. It is now the oldest operating business in Colleyville.

When the business opened, Colleyville had many more horses and cattle than it does today.

"It was small," Foreman said. "It was a nice little town at the time. It was a two-lane road out here [Colleyville Boulevard]."

Foreman said he still sells animal feed, but he had to diversify to stay in business.

The store also sells seeds, pet supplies, power equipment, lawn and garden items, organic gardening material, home and patio items, barbecue grills, hot sauce and barbecue rubs, bird houses and bird feeders, as well as homebrew supplies to make a variety of beers and wines and gifts.

"We have pretty much anything you need for the garden or outside," Foreman said.

The store even sells propane for gas grills and recreational vehicles.

"Foreman’s has brought the concept of a general store into the new millennium by understanding the market and their customers, and continues their commitment to old-school customer service," said Colleyville Mayor David Kelly. "They definitely have a successful formula and a lasting legacy in Colleyville."

There is a little something in the store for everyone, Foreman said.

"I have some customers who visit every other week and spend about an hour and a half looking for something new," Foreman said.

The store sells power equipment with brands like Toro, Honda, Stihl and Echo.

"Anything we sell, we service," Foreman said. "We aren’t the cheapest shop, but what comes out of here comes out right."

The store has many unusual items that make good gifts. "When we started getting the gifty things, it was just things we liked," Foreman said.

Foreman moved to the area when he was transferred with IBM. He said the store’s success allowed him to stay in Colleyville.

"They wanted to move me and I decided I wasn’t moving," he said.

So, 16 years ago he retired from IBM.

Foreman said he gets to meet many people at the store, and he enjoys that.

"We stay busy," he said. "It’s not work, because we enjoy it."

Foreman’s General Store is at 3800 Colleyville Boulevard and is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call 817-281-7252 to reach the store.
